Have you got big questions?
God’s
Word has big answers!
And
we dive deep in that Word Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m.
The
program is called “The Essential 100,” and includes a
carefully selected list of Bible passages — 50 from the Old
Testament and 50 from the New Testament.
These
Scriptures and corresponding teaching will help you get a deeper
understanding of Biblical truths, and a better grasp on the Bible
as a whole.
The
Essential 100 Challenge is simple and achievable, and engages the
entire congregation. Here’s how it works: You read that week’s
selected passage. These typically are one to two chapters long and
can be read in 10 minutes or less. Then, come in Wednesday night
and we will discuss the Scripture, perhaps reveal a few hidden
truths, and identify how these Scriptures are to be applied in our
daily lives.
And
there is no greater time than now to read and understand God’s
Word. Scripture clearly warns us that Satan empowers false
prophets and apostles. They teach destructive heresies and slander
Christ with such skill that even the strongest believers are
fooled. In their greed, these “deceitful workers” make up
clever lies to lay hold of your money. They promise liberty, but
are themselves slaves of corruption. Their words are as empty as
wells without water; their doctrine as fleeting as clouds carried
away by the wind (2 Peter 2).
And
they’re not alone in this quest.
Satan
hinders the preaching and impact of the Gospel. The god of this
age disguises himself as an angel of light to lead the sheep
astray (2 Cor. 11:13-14; 1 John 4:1), and he blinds the
unbeliever so the gospel’s glorious light cannot shine upon
their sin (1 Cor. 1:18; 2 Cor. 4:3-4).
Through
the blind indifference and disbelief that follows, Satan ensnares
the wicked and deceives the world. The result, as Paul describes
it, are people who become “lovers of themselves, lovers of
money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without
self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong,
haughty,
lovers of pleasure rather
than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its
power” (2 Timothy 2:2-5; Revelation 12:9).
The
only weapon you have to defend yourself from such defeat is the
Word of God. Sadly, those weapons remain unused in the lives of
many Christians. According to The Barna Research Group:
·
Fewer than half of adults
can name the four gospels.
·
Many Christians cannot
identify more than three disciples.
·
60 percent of Americans
can’t name five of the 10 Commandments.
Bible
sales are strong; recent research has shown that 90% of U.S.
households own at least one Bible. But surveys show that fewer
than 20% of those who own a Bible will ever read it through.
This
lack of Bible reading is not limited to “nominal” Christians,
either. According to surveys by the Barna Research Group, only 14%
of evangelicals read the Bible at least once per week.
This
research indicates that what is needed is not more Bible sales or
distribution but more actual Bible engagement; the regular
reading of the Bible and application of its message to one's life.
That’s
what we’ve set out to do on Wednesday nights — and we pray
that you’ll join us on this great journey!
